My New York grandmother used to say, “I’m for the birds.” She meant it, too – she birdwatched from her kitchen window all year long, tea and binoculars on the table next to her.

When she came to visit me in Colorado, she saw a hummingbird for the first time. She was smitten – she bought mugs, towels, anything with a hummingbird on it.

Now that she’s gone, every time I see one outside my own kitchen window, I think of her. I think of how nature connects us all.
